Biography
Daniel Pocock is an Irish-Australian software engineer. He has worked for a number of banks and in 2021 founded the Software Freedom Institute, whose aim is to put humans "in charge of technology".
Question time
Why did you decide to run in this election?
As a professional in engineering, I want to help people with the challenges we face in getting large infrastructure projects started, and help small businesses to get on with what they do best. I want to work on making our homes more efficient and eliminate social media risks and so on.
What do you think is the greatest issue the country faces right now?
Seventy percent of direct investment comes from US companies and the the government takes it for granted. We put all our eggs in one basket and now we need a different set of leaders who can think more broadly. Now that president-elect Donald Trump wants those companies to pay their taxes in America, we will lose corporation tax in Ireland. The impact won't be gradual like a rising tide, it will hit us like a tsunami. The Dáil needs somebody good with numbers who can help.
What would you like your first speaking time in the Dáil to be about if you get elected?
I will cover the impact of harassment, censorship, bullying and abuse on families -- both online and in other contexts.
