Biography

Cowhey Shahid is a community and political activist who owned a successful takeaway business for many years. Her priorities are dealing with the cost of living and home ownership.

Question time
Why did you decide to run in this election?

Fianna Fáil and Fine Gael have failed and will continue to fail ordinary workers and families in Cork, whether it’s housing, childcare or the cost of living. Only a Sinn Féin government have both the policy and the ambition that is needed to fix these crises and I want to play my part in a strong Sinn Féin team in the Dáil delivering this for ordinary workers and families.

What do you think is the greatest issue the country faces right now?

Housing. Whether it’s so called ‘affordable housing’ in my constituency selling for up to €390,000 or runaway rents. I regularly meet young people who cannot afford to buy or rent, as well as parents who are worried about their young adult children who are still at home. Only a Sinn Féin government will bring home ownership back into the reach of working people in Cork.

What would you like your first speaking time in the Dáil to be about if you get elected?

A Sinn Féin-led government will start delivering from day one. I would use my first speaking time in the Dáil to show how we will improve the lives of ordinary workers and families by making homes more affordable and bringing home ownership back into the reach of working people. Sinn Féin’s housing policy will tackle the housing crisis by increasing affordable and social housing, banning rent increases, and reducing the costs to renters by putting a month's rent back in their pocket.
