Question time
Why did you decide to run in this election?
I want to be a strong voice for Roscommon-Galway in the next Government to shape policy, drive investment into key areas, and deliver for this region. I have spent the last five years in the Seanad and have a strong track record across the constituency in securing funding and delivering for the communities I represent. The Roscommon-Galway constituency needs and deserves a Government TD to ensure this region is not left behind. We need to see further investment in crucial infrastructure, such as housing, healthcare, hospitals and schools. I want to effect change. I want to be the voice for the people of Roscommon-Galway – the voice for what matters, where it matters.
What do you think is the greatest issue the country faces right now?
Nationally, housing and housing supply is the greatest issue, and in Roscommon-Galway, the situation is no different. Roscommon is in the top 10 in terms of applications to the Vacant Homes Refurbishment programme, with 355 applications and €11.5 million paid out to date. This is helping to breathe life into our towns and villages. In the first nine months of this year, 49,007 homes commenced – more than double in the same period of 2023. But the demand remains and we need to see more supply in county towns and rural areas. Fine Gael’s €40 billion housing plan is focused on building 303,000 homes in the next six years, reaching 60,000 per year by the end of 2030, with 50% of homes outside major cities.
What would you like your first speaking time in the Dáil to be about if you get elected?
We need major investment into Roscommon-Galway, including affordable housing options in the constituency, a solution on Lough Funshinagh and a plan and funding for those who have been devastated by flooding. We also need better Local Link bus and school bus transport options. With health issues, we need an increase into Day Theatre space in Roscommon University Hospital, a guarantee of a quicker timeframe for nine extra treatment bays in the ED at Portiuncula University Hospital, and acceleration of the 50-bed unit for Sacred Heart Hospital & Care Home, Roscommon. Finally, I'd like to see urgent progress on the Galway to Athlone Cycleway to transform local communities with a safe off-road quality cycleway for families to enjoy.
