Question time
Why did you decide to run in this election?

Having spent most of my life working in the service of others, from my current role as a teacher of young adults in Navan to past roles with an aid agency overseas, I am asking for the opportunity to now represent and advocate for the people of Meath West. I believe the Social Democrats offer a real opportunity to the country to help address some of the structural causes to our housing, health, childcare and disability crises, which deeply affect this constituency. And if elected I believe our party has a real opportunity to shape a future government to help finally address these issues.

What do you think is the greatest issue the country faces right now?

The social contract between state and citizen has broken down. The idea that you pay your taxes and get a basic level of service and protection from the government has gone under the present government. Instead, people are working every hour in the day and still cannot afford homes or find places to rent. Young couples are paying second mortgages in order to afford childcare, if they are lucky enough to find it. People are having to pay what is effectively a second tax for private health insurance so afraid they are of getting sick and languishing on waiting lists, while parents of children with disabilities are having to fight tooth and nail for services that should be a given.

What would you like your first speaking time in the Dáil to be about if you get elected?

In many ways it doesn't matter what area I get to speak about first. So many issues affect Meath West and are important to the people of this area that I would take great pride in speaking on any of these issues; housing, health, childcare, the climate crisis, transport. That being said, when I hear stories of parents who are fighting on behalf of their children who have a disability, I feel a special sense of purpose in my role championing their cause, so to pick just one it would be disability.
