Biography

John Maher was born in the Glen and currently lives in Ballyvolane. He is a Cork City Councillor, elected in 2019 and 2024. His priorities are housing, affordable rents, public transport, a cleaner environment and workers’ rights.

Question time
Why did you decide to run in this election?

As an elected councillor, I'm constantly engaging with my constituents and I hear and understand their frustrations. We need to do better on housing, care, transport, climate & childcare. I will bring a new voice and perspective to the Dáil and I believe I've the necessary skill set to help solve the issues we face as a country.

What do you think is the greatest issue the country faces right now?

Lack of affordable housing and affordable rents. Every second door you knock, you hear of the struggles of people who are educated, working and saving, yet they are running to stand still due to the lack of affordable homes and exorbitant rents.

What would you like your first speaking time in the Dáil to be about if you get elected?

It's important we enact the Occupied Territories Bill and I would use my time to highlight this and get it passed.
