Biography

Duncan Smith has been a Labour TD for the Dublin Fingal Constituency since 2020. He is the Party Whip and spokesperson on Health, Disability, Transport and Communications. He was previously a member of Fingal County Council from 2014 to 2020.

Question time
Why did you decide to run in this election?

I want to continue to be a strong voice for the people of Dublin Fingal East. Whether it be for the Metrolink, the expansion of the northern commuter line or the lack of a primary care centre for Swords, I want to continue to be the public representative who doesn’t just say they want change, but actively works to achieve it.

What do you think is the greatest issue the country faces right now?

The housing crisis. So many of the issues in this country all come back to the housing crisis. We have had a government that consistently has missed their own targets and proved that they are not up to the task. I believe that the plan that the Labour Party has can be the turning point in addressing the greatest civil rights issue of this generation.

What would you like your first speaking time in the Dáil to be about if you get elected?

I want to continue raising the issue of the lack of investment in the health services in Fingal. Beaumont Hospital has faced chronic underinvestment while the population of Fingal has rapidly expanded. Swords is still yet to get a primary care centre despite promises of its delivery over a decade ago. This lack of investment has huge impacts on my community and is something that needs to be urgently addressed.
