Biography

Nessa Hourigan has been a Green Party TD for Dublin Central since the 2020 General Election, and is the party Spokesperson on Finance and Health. She was a Dublin City councillor between 2019 and 2020. She advocates for the decriminalisation of all drugs.

Question time
Why did you decide to run in this election?

Over the last 5 years, I have worked really hard in Dublin Central to make a difference in my community. I want Dublin city to be an incredible place to live and grow up in. For me that means safe and accessible streets, culture and vibrant nightlife, good transport, affordable housing, green space and clean air. During my time as an elected representative, I have worked to bring about that version of Dublin and I want to keep that work going in the next 5 years.

What do you think is the greatest issue the country faces right now?

I think that in an era of increasing uncertainty, with war in Europe, and climate events more common than ever, public trust in the state is hugely important. It is the work of all politicians to ensure that people feel they have a political voice that is heard, have access to a secure and affordable home, healthcare in their locality and can utilise the services they need for every stage in life. Eroding that trust between the people and the state leads nowhere good, and with it we can develop our communities together.

What would you like your first speaking time in the Dáil to be about if you get elected?

There are two major unfinished projects from my time in the Dail that I intend to immediately continue the fight on if re-elected. The first is the implementation of drug policy reform. We have come a long way on our thinking around addiction and drug use in the last 5 years, now we need implementation. The second is the re-establishment of the Committee on Disability Matters - the implementation of the UNCRPD is crucial to the fair and equal development of our society.
