After sharp warnings from the US and others that Al-Shifa must be protected, Israel said the raid was being executed based on “an operational necessity”.
The UN has said it estimates that at least 2,300 people are inside the hospital and may be unable to escape because of fierce fighting.
A journalist inside the hospital said Israeli soldiers were interrogating people this morning, among them patients and doctors.
