Martin was first elected as a TD in the 2016 general election. She has been the Deputy Leader of the Green Party since 2011. She is the party's education spokesperson. She was elected to Dún Laoghaire-Rathdown County Council in 2014. She was a member of the Oireachtas committees on the future of mental health care and education respectively. She is a former English and music teacher.
