O'Dowd has been a TD since first elected in 2002. He previously served as a Senator from 1997 to 2002 on the administrative panel. He is formerly the Minister of State at the Department of Communications, Energy & Natural Resources and Environment, Community and Local Government. He has held a number of senior party positions and is a former Mayor of Drogheda.
