Byrne was elected to the Seanad in 2016 on the agricultural panel. She is the Seanad spokesperson on education and skills. She was first elected to Limerick City and County Council in 1999 and held her seat until becoming a Senator. She was Mayor of Limerick from 2010 to 2011. She does volunteer work for Our Lady of Lourdes, the Special Olympics and a local school.
