O'Loughlin was first elected as a TD in 2016. She is the Fianna Fáil spokesperson on equality, immigration and integration. She is the former chair of the Oireachtas Education and Skills Committee. She was first elected to Kildare County Council in 1999 and held her seat until elected to the Dáil. She served as Mayor of Kildare in 2015.
