Cannon has been a TD since first elected in 2011. He was a member of the Seanad from 2007 to 2011 with the Progressive Democrats party. He was appointed as Minister of State for the Diaspora and International Development in 2017. He was first elected to Galway County Council in 2004. He has been the chairperson of Carrabane and scout leader for the local scout unit.
