Burton was first elected as a TD in 1992. She lost her seat in 1997 and was re-elected in 2002. She has been re-elected in every general election since. She is the former leader of the Labour Party. She was first elected to Dublin County Council in 1991. She was appointed as Minister for Social Protection in 2011 and she is also a former lecturer at TU Dublin.

In my years as a TD, I have fought to secure equal rights for women and to promote an open society that respects diversity and tolerance.
