Reilly was first elected as a TD in the 2007 general election and retained his seat until 2016. He was appointed as a Senator in 2016. He is the former Minister for Children and Youth Affairs and Health respectively. He was Deputy Leader of Fine Gael. He is the party's Seanad spokesperson on jobs, enterprise and innovation. He continues to work as a GP in Lusk.
