McDonagh has contested a number of elections in the past. He previously worked as a steel-fixer but is now retired. He has campaigned against water charges and the household tax.

I'm the only socialist standing in Meath and the only one fighting for public housing on public land.
What is your number one priority for your constituency?
Public housing is my number one priority.
What one thing would you like to do in your first 100 days of the new Dáil if you are elected?
I would like to declare a national housing crisis.
