Co-opted first onto Wexford County Council in place of his father in 2003, he was re-elected in 2004 and served until 2007 when he won a Dáil seat. He lost his seat in 2011 but was elected to the Administrative Panel of the Seanad. He is the Fine Gael Seanad spokesperson on finance and has held front bench positions in the past.
