Elected first to the Dáil for Fine Gael in 1987, he has been a sitting TD since. Now an Independent, he is a former Minister for Transport, Energy and Communications but resigned from the ministry amid controversy. He was investigated as part of the Moriarty Tribunal and there were a number of findings made against him which he denies.
