He was elected to Louth County Council for Fine Gael in 1999 and served as a councillor until he lost his seat in 2014. A two-time former mayor of Drogheda, he left Fine Gael in 2014 and joined Renua in 2015. He currently works with Enterprise Ireland and is a founding member of the social enterprise Ablevison, which helps people with intellectual disabilities.
