A sitting TD since 2011, she had served previously in the Dáil and Kildare County Council and had unsuccessfully challenged a number of general elections for the Labour Party, The Workers' Party, and as an Independent. She is currently joint-leader of the Social Democrats has tabled much legislation throughout her political career.
