Support from readers like you keeps The Journal open.
You are visiting us because we have something you value. Independent, unbiased news that tells the truth. Advertising revenue goes some way to support our mission, but this year it has not been enough.
If you've seen value in our reporting, please contribute what you can, so we can continue to produce accurate and meaningful journalism. For everyone who needs it.
An independently-owned and managed media organisation, we began small in 2010 with The Journal and a sports site that is now The 42, and have since established ourselves as a market leader in online news in Ireland. We employ dozens of journalists across our publications; The Journal, The 42, The Journal Investigates and The Journal FactCheck unit are now among the most iconic of Ireland's digital brands.
Our FactCheck unit began operations in 2016 and has grown to become the leading factchecking entity in Ireland.
The Journal
The Journal is our flagship publication with a mix of breaking news, in-depth reporting, opinion, explainers and exclusives. Our objective is to provide open access to quality journalism for every online news consumer in Ireland, equipping our readers to make informed decisions on those issues which impact their lives.
We deliver informative, timely, contextualised news coverage to the largest online news audience in Ireland. Since 2017, the Reuters Digital News Institute has consistently named The Journal as one of the top two most-read online news sources in the Irish market.
The Journal FactCheck unit
The Journal FactCheck unit was established in 2016 to sift truth from claims in the Irish political arena in the run-up to General Election of that year but has since expanded its operations to factcheck misinformation and disinformation across all spheres. In early 2020, we launched our Covid-19 Debunking Project, and we contribute to the global CoronaVirusFacts Alliance.
Since 2017, we have been the only verified Irish signatory of the International Fact-Checking Network (IFCN) Code of Principles. For more information on our factchecking project, how we run it and how you can participate, see here.
The 42
Our sports publication started out as TheScore in 2010. We quickly attracted an enthusiastic readership and within a couple of years had grown to become one of the top Irish sports news outlets.
A rebrand to The 42 in 2015 saw the growing team double down on long-form features and multimedia analysis. Our mission is to deliver quality journalism for passionate Irish sports fans and bring you closer to the stories that matter through the analysis, insight and storytelling of our award-winning team.
The Journal Investigates
We launched The Journal Investigates unit in September 2024 to build on the award-winning work of our previous crowdfunding project Noteworthy.
The Journal Investigates publishes exclusive investigations every fortnight, shining a light on abuses of power and privilege. The team goes beyond breaking news to explore, expose and explain the inner workings of modern Ireland. It is resource-heavy journalism that packs a punch; true public service journalism which our readers can help support by contributing to our readers' fund.
