The Fine Gael MEP will replace Phil Hogan, who resigned in the wake of the Golfgate scandal.
Phil Hogan came to the “reluctant conclusion” yesterday that he should step down from his senior EU job.
“Of course I broke no law, I broke no regulations, but I could have adhered better to the guidelines,” he told RTÉ this evening.
Though the government statement says concerns remain about the EU Commissioner’s account, it said that ultimately the decision lies with the European Commission President.
The EU Commissioner is based in Belgium, which is not on Ireland’s travel ‘green list’.
This follows his renomination as Ireland’s commissioner to the EU earlier this year.
