The man, an experienced cave diver, had gone to the area possibly to explore a local cave.
Poor weather conditions last night prevented the Irish Coast Guard from dispatching a helicopter until this morning.
The building is steeped in history, with its origins dating back to the 1670s.
The Department of Transport said the winds were high, but well within the capabilities of the helicopter.
