The flight left Barajas airport in Madrid earlier today.
The flight from Vancouver to Sydney encountered “un-forecasted and sudden turbulence”.
Air Canada has apologised and said it is investigating the incident.
“Where’s this guy going? He’s on the taxiway,” one of the pilots on the ground said.
The child was treated by a doctor on the plane but was pronounced dead after landing.
Air Canada flight AC895 was travelling from Milan to Toronto when it was forced to make the landing.
A spokesperson for the airline described it as a “very unsettling experience” for the passengers.
They direct flights will begin next summer.
Two of the passengers required “urgent attention” but most were treated for minor cuts and bruises.
The airlines said the agreement will make travel between the two countries easier with customers using a single electronic ticket to travel.
